I grew up skiing and wandering the woods of Vermont. After graduating from Dartmouth with a BA in Visual Studies I attended Pratt Institute in the Communication Design program for two years and then worked as a graphic designer for a decade in New York. I began traveling South East Asia with a point-and-shoot. I bought a Leica. I closed my design studio and moved to Bangkok, Thailand. I've lived in Bangkok for 6 years as a photographer. In addition to my editorial assignments I've been pursuing personal stories on the effects of tourism and locations where tourists and locals coexist. My photographs have been recognized by the American Photography competition. AP-17, 2001; AP-20, 2004; AP-23 2006. A story on Pattaya, Thailand was shown at the 2007 Angkor Photography Festival. Work has been published in: Travel+Leisure, Conde Nast Traveller USA & UK, Budget Travel, Gourmet, Esquire, GQ, Departures and Men's Vogue. |
"Being a stranger means being free, and experiencing the weightlessness of the self. There is no longer anyone to tell you who you are -- and so you are no one. If Andre Malraux was right when he wrote that "Europe believes that whatever does not imitate its reality represents a dream," this explains what is so appealing about Asia, the chance to journey through a dream, to cut loose from your own identity and concious will and abandon yourself to other forces; to immerse yourself in the murky waters of the unconcsious and become invisible, even to yourself."
