The Buddha Within Thai men of all ages enter Buddhist monasteries at different points in their lives -- perhaps only for a month or two, but the symbolism of following the path of the Buddha resonates strongly in Thai society. The act of leaving the world behind is accompanied by numerous ceremonies lasting about two days with each community having their own particular versions. The rites are as important as the act of leaving -- they reinforce and remind the men the connection they have to family, community and history. ::: |
Rajas Fashions Where "all the young dudes" take time out from their holidays (and the go-go bars next door) to get fitted for the corporate world back in the West. And a fair amount of generals, senators, ex-presidents and captains of industry swear by Rajas tailoring -- above all the bargain prices. For MEN'S VOGUE |
Witnessing Cambodia In 1975 the clock was turned back in Cambodia to Year Zero. The reign of the Khmer Rouge had begun. In the four years that followed more than 20 percent of the population was killed, starved or worked to death. When the regime was toppled in 1979, the country was utterly broken. Trust in ones' neighbors, belief in a system of justice, and any sense of community had disappeared -- Cambodia was void of all the elements of society. 2009 presents an opportunity for justice and accountability when the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia begins the trials of surviving Khmer Rouge leaders.
The trial itself is a reference point to examine Cambodian society -- to look beyond the media event the trial will become, to the villages and rural areas where much of the national trauma took place and where the lack of law and justice still corrodes contemporary society.
